January 1, 2025 Update: The hiking trails mentioned here will be closed Jan. 6 through the end of the month for our parking lot expansion. We will open the trails up as soon as it’s finished. If you really want to hike the mountain, you can access it via the Lake Trail, which is across from Shepherd Mountain Lake.
Discover the Wonders of Shepherd Mountain: A Hiker’s Paradise in the Missouri Ozarks
Nestled in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks, Shepherd Mountain stands as a proud member of the St. Francois Mountain Range. Reaching a height of 1,604 feet with an elevation gain of 645 feet, this majestic mountain offers a variety of hiking experiences that cater to both the seasoned hiker and the more casual adventurer.
Exploring the Trails of Shepherd Mountain
Shepherd Mountain boasts three distinct hiking trails, each offering a unique path to the summit. “Steep” and “Less Steep” is a 2.5 mile loop (approx.) to the top and back down the mountain. Coolio’s Climb is 2.3 miles to the top.
The Steep Trail
For those looking to follow the path of history, the Steep Trail provides a direct route along the old mining/logging road. This route serves as a challenging ascent for hikers seeking a steep and rigorous climb. Follow sign for “Steep” next to the Pavilion. (This trail merges with Less Steep at the top of the major climb. After you merge you will still gain elevation until you reach the “hub” where the shuttles make their stop.)
The Less Steep Trail
Built for those who prefer a more gradual ascent, the Less Steep Trail still offers plenty of challenges. Despite its name, don’t be misled into thinking this path is an easy stroll. (Start walking up the shuttle road, and veer right at the brown trail marker sign and pink ribbons in the trees.)
Once the paths merge they will lead you near/past two notable viewpoints:
Cannon Overlook One: Offers an initial glimpse of the stunning landscape. (Currently overgrown, but in progress for Summer of 2024)
Cannon Overlook Two: The highest overlook, providing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, (especially with the leaves off the trees). From here, you can see the historical site where Confederates aimed at the fort during the Battle of Pilot Knob, as well as the distant white church that served as a hospital during the Civil War.
Coolio’s Climb
For a more leisurely and scenic route, the third option offers a 2.3-mile hike to the top, Coolio’s Climb. This trail features a water crossing and rocky terrain, making it a picturesque and moderately challenging hike. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes to navigate the varied landscape comfortably.
The Way Down
From the top, the hiking trail continues around and down the mountain. (Follow the pink ribbons and brown trail markers.) You will encounter rocky terrain, and a water crossing at the end during the rainy season so be ready to hop across some rocks. Another option is to hike down Coolio’s Climb, adding extra distance (and still potentially have a water crossing).
Additional Highlights
During your hike you will be passing Mountain Biking Trails. Please watch for them as paths cross each other, and cheer them on.
Convenient Shuttle Service: To make your hiking experience more accessible, a convenient shuttle service is available to transport you to the top and you can hike down to the overlooks. Then finish your hike down, or ride the shuttle back to the beginning. Passes are available at The Wheelhouse, $5/person.
Bouldering Locations: For adventure enthusiasts, Shepherd Mountain offers six-plus bouldering locations, perfect for testing your climbing skills.
